🟡⚫🟢 Freedom on the table.
As an American who's lived in Pakistan, the US, Norway, and now the Netherlands, Juneteenth is a day I always mark. This Friday, NuMa Kitchen is honoring it with a one-day Southern plate — choice of slow-cooked oxtails or buttermilk fried chicken, savory greens, fresh cornbread, and our house-made hibiscus cooler.
A portion of every sale goes to local Black-led organisations here in Eindhoven.
Friday 19 June, from 17:00 — until sold out.
Muharram ki Haleem — A Tradition of Remembrance
Muharram ki Haleem — A Tradition of Remembrance
Haleem's story begins with hareesa (or harees), a simple wheat-and-meat porridge from the Arabian Peninsula that traveled along trade routes into Persia and then the Indian subcontinent. Persian and Mughal kitchens transformed it over centuries — lentils were added, the wheat was pounded longer, spices grew richer — until it became the haleem we know today, perfected in Hyderabad's royal kitchens.
Its deep connection to Muharram comes from devotion: haleem is traditionally cooked in large batches and distributed as niyaz, an act of remembrance for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at Karbala. The hours of slow pounding and stirring were historically a communal effort, mirroring the spirit of shared sacrifice the month commemorates.
At NuMa Kitchen in Eindhoven, we honor that legacy — simmering our haleem the traditional way, low and slow, until wheat, lentils, and meat meld into one. Pre-order for 9th & 10th Muharram, June 25–26. €16.95/500gm, buy two and save.
